Pet Business Regulation and Education in Seattle and King County Washington

Trends in pet ownership and an ever-expanding array of services available for pets bring new challenges to zoonotic disease control and prevention. To address these trends, comprehensive pet business regulations developed by Public Health—Seattle & King County were codified by the King County Board of Health in early 2010. The regulations require that specified pet-related businesses located in the city of Seattle and throughout King County be permitted and inspected annually.
Participants will:
  1. Gain knowledge of how facility, sanitation and Zoonotic disease prevention standards were developed and implemented for a new pet business regulation.
  2. Identify the key elements of the regulation that focus on education of the operator and the public with the goal of Zoonotic disease prevention.
  3. Describe how an infection control plan can promote disease prevention and education through regulation.
