Be a VoiceThis year the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) has added a new way to participate in the Call for Abstracts process for the Annual Educational Conference (AEC) & Exhibition. It is called, "Be a voice" and it gives you the opportunity to tell us what you'd like to experience at the AEC. Tell us topics you'd like to hear about and speakers you'd like to see. Review abstracts and provide input. Help NEHA develop a training and education experience that continues to advance the proficiency of the environmental health profession AND helps create bottom line improvements for your organization!

Effective and Efficient Training for EH Officials

Time and money, we hear that all the time. The two limiting factors in almost all that we do. It is also true when it comes to enrolling in and taking educational classes. Finding the time and resources to train staff can be very challenging for health departments, especially when it comes to seasonal staff. In the fast-paced world that we work in, being prepared is crucial. Swimming pool and spa inspector training exists for a very important purpose: to protect the public from the disease and bodily injury that can result in suffering and even death. Thus the quality of pool and spa inspections is a matter of concern not only for swimming pool users. It is a concern for environmental health officials as well. The Model Aquatic Health Code Operator Training Module is clear on the need for training, and not just for the operator but also the inspector. Questions you may have are; where do you get this training from? Do you have to travel? Do you need to bring in an instructor? What tools do I have when I am out in the field conducting an inspection? Self-paced online learning is rapidly growing as the preferred way to becoming educated. Accessing training materials remotely and have mobile tools in the field is helping environmental health officials be better prepared. This presentation will explore the options that are available to health departments for streamlining their educational programs to make sure staff is prepared to preserve public health.
