A Comparative In-Field Evaluation of Single Family Residential Wastewater Systems in Virginia

Wastewater treatment systems from four companies were evaluated using permanently occupied single-family residences located in the State of Virginia. Sampling of these systems began in the summer of 1995 and continued to the summer of 2011. Home locations ranged throughout Virginia. Concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, and either fecal coliform or Escherichia coli species were measured in system influent and effluent at least four times (once in each season) for each home. This valuable data was incorrectly statistically analyzed allowing pseudoreplication. This paper corrects that improper statistical approach and provides information on the performance of these treatment systems under real world conditions.
